EMILI BOSCH I ROGER | COVE ON THE COSTA BRAVA WITH BOATS | CATALAN LANDSCAPE | WATERCOLOR ON PAPER
The vibrant light and formal synthesis of the Mediterranean, captured by one of the great visual chroniclers of 20th-century Catalonia.
HISTORY AND CURATORIAL ANALYSIS
The chronicler of landscape painting, Emili Bosch i Roger (Barcelona, 1894–1980), was much more than a landscape artist; he was a key figure in understanding the evolution of Catalan art from Noucentisme towards a more moderate modernity. A founding member of the Els Evolucionistes group , Bosch i Roger had the ability to structure the landscape with an almost architectural solidity (a legacy of Cézanne) without losing the freshness of the moment.
Context: The Costa Brava. This work unmistakably transports us to the Costa Brava (probably the Blanes or Tossa de Mar area), the painter's favorite setting. Unlike his urban views of Barcelona, here the artist relaxes and seeks to capture the salty atmosphere and the rugged topography of the coves.
Visual Analysis: The watercolor demonstrates Bosch i Roger's mastery of drawing from life. There is no hesitation. Observe how he uses black lines (ink or highly saturated watercolor) to depict the rocks and beached boats ( llauts ), lending weight and structure to the composition. He then applies color selectively: ochres for the cliffs, watery blues for the sea, and touches of red/pink for the human figures, which act as visual anchor points to give scale to the landscape. It is a work of synthesis: with just a few strokes, he constructs an entire environment.
WHY IS THIS PIECE AN OPPORTUNITY?
-
Historical Signature: Bosch i Roger is an author present in the MNAC (Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya) and in the main Catalan historical collections. To have one of his works is to have an illustrious surname in local art.
-
Commercial Theme: Seascapes and views of the Costa Brava are, par excellence, the most sought-after theme by collectors of this author.
-
Freshness: Unlike his oil paintings, which can sometimes be dense and dark, this watercolor retains the luminosity and transparency of the paper, resulting in a very decorative and pleasant effect.
-
Authenticity: The signature "Bosch Roger" in the lower right corner is clear and fully corresponds to his usual handwriting.

THE WORKSHOP NOTE
I chose this piece because it evokes the feeling of summers from bygone days. Bosch i Roger didn't paint "postcards," he painted atmospheres. I love the speed with which he renders the boats in the foreground; they are just four strokes, but perfectly constructed. It's an honest, unpretentious work that works beautifully framed with a generous passe-partout that allows the scene to breathe.
