ERNEST IBÁÑEZ | CAMPING (EXPRESSIONIST FOREST) | LLEIDA SCHOOL | ACRYLIC ON PAPER
An explosion of color and verticality that demonstrates Ibáñez's mastery in transforming an everyday landscape into a vibrant experience, endorsed by its certificate of origin.
HISTORY AND CURATORIAL ANALYSIS
Master of Materials: Ernest Ibáñez Neach (Lleida, 1920 – Barcelona, 2009) was a complete artist: an internationally renowned painter, sculptor, engraver, and enameller. His career was defined by a constant exploration of texture and volume. Although he is celebrated for his enamels and sculptures, he conveyed that same constructive force in his easel paintings. This work, dated 1997 (a period of full maturity), shows us an artist who no longer needed to prove anything, painting with complete freedom and ease.
Visual Analysis: Vertical Rhythm. Under the title "Camping," Ibáñez doesn't offer us a genre scene, but rather a rhythmic interpretation of nature. The composition is dominated by the verticality of the tree trunks, drawn with thick black lines that act as a graphic skeleton. Above (and below) this structure, color explodes with a distinctly Fauvist influence: red trunks contrasting with green treetops and a ground that vibrates in ochres and blues. There is no timid preparatory drawing; there is only a brushstroke, a gesture, and a dense, almost impasto-like application of acrylic paint.
Provenance: A key added value of this piece is its traceability. The work is mounted in its original folder from the Indecor Gallery in Lleida, a historic institution in the artist's hometown. The accompanying certificate, signed in 2012 by gallery owner Josep Ramon Segura, directly links the work to the primary professional art circuit, eliminating any doubt about its authenticity.

THE WORKSHOP NOTE
What captivated me about this piece is that it's not a "tranquil" landscape; it's a landscape with a vibrant energy. Ibáñez painted like a sculptor, with force. The contrast between the dark tree trunks and the light filtering through them is magnificent. Furthermore, finding the piece with its complete provenance (the Indecor certificate) is a gift for us collectors obsessed with provenance. It's ready to be enjoyed.
