Curatorial Analysis: J. Fin's Own Voice

José Vilató, known as J. Fin , faced the greatest challenge a painter can encounter: being Pablo Picasso's nephew and sharing a studio with him. This work is a testament to how Fin managed to overcome that enormous shadow and find his own identity in abstraction.

Unlike his uncle's analytical breakdown, here Fin builds.

  1. Matter and Texture: The use of oil and acrylic allows him to create a rich, impasto surface. It is not a flat painting; there is body, there is weight in the brushstrokes.

  2. Structure: The composition is anchored in thick black lines that organize the space. They do not seek to represent objects, but rather to create a solid and balanced structure that supports the patches of color.

  3. The Palette: It moves in a range of black, blue and off-white, typical of the post-war painting of the School of Paris, which preferred sobriety and elegance to stridency.

Value of the Piece

  • Historical Lineage: J. Fin is a key link in the history of 20th-century Spanish art, connecting the legacy of the Picasso avant-garde with the abstraction of the School of Paris.

  • Solid Aesthetic: This piece works thanks to its visual impact and chromatic balance. Its size and composition make it highly versatile for any collection.

  • Signature: The signature "J. Fin" is recognized and valued, present in important collections such as those of the MACBA or the Reina Sofía.

Workshop Note

This work stands out for its simplicity. The hand of a painter who knows his craft and needs no artifice is evident. It is pure painting: color, matter, and structure. A perfect piece for those who appreciate the history of the Spanish avant-garde without the need for lengthy theoretical discourses.
