J. FIN (JOSÉ VILATÓ RUIZ) | BIOMORPHIC TOTEM WITH PATTERNS | ORGANIC ABSTRACTION | MIXED MEDIA ON TUB PAPER

An exploration of the primitive sign that engages with the heritage of surrealism and the magic of the gestural stroke.

HISTORY AND CURATORIAL ANALYSIS

J. Fin (José Vilató Ruiz, 1916-1969) embodies the driving force of the Spanish avant-garde, which, after the Civil War, sought creative inspiration in Paris. While some of his generation became obsessed with the dense textures of Informalism, Fin always maintained a fidelity to drawing and structure, perhaps a legacy of his undeniable Picasso-esque influence. This work belongs to his mature period in the French capital, a time when he abandoned explicit figuration to explore a language of signs and primary forms that engage directly with late Surrealism.

The composition assaults the eye with a central ovoid entity, suspended in the void of the tracing paper, which acts as a nucleus of contained energy. The artist executes a bold black outline of varying thickness, defining a form that oscillates between the biological and the totemic. Within, the rigidity breaks down: a network of vertical patterns and stenciled dots vibrates against a magenta pigment background, lending volume and an almost tactile texture that contrasts radically with the pristine white of the surrounding space.

This piece functions as a modern ideogram, a self-contained sign that invites deciphering rather than passive contemplation. The visual tension is masterfully resolved between the weight of the central blotch and the lightness of the linear appendages that project like antennae or limbs, endowing the whole with an imminent kinetic movement. Fin manages here to transform the scribble into a symbol, creating an image that possesses the magnetic presence of an ancient amulet reinterpreted through a modern lens.

WHY IS THIS PIECE AN OPPORTUNITY?

  • Relevance/Signature: The work shows the most intuitive side of J. Fin, stylistically connecting him with the graphic work of masters such as Joan Miró or Paul Klee, but maintaining his unmistakable personal calligraphy.

  • Uniqueness/Rareness: The use of hatching (internal hatching) and stippling is less common in his usual quick sketches. This indicates a greater descriptive intent and more detailed work on texture and density.

  • Aesthetics/Decoration: It has a strong graphic personality. It functions as a "small entity" with its own character, bringing a vibrant splash of color and intellectual sophistication to any wall.

  • Support/Condition: Heavyweight inkjet paper with natural deckle edges. The paper's texture interacts with the ink, absorbing it unevenly and creating rich nuances in the blacks.

THE WORKSHOP NOTE

I chose this piece because it has a life of its own. Unlike purely geometric abstraction, which is cold and intellectual, this figure is almost endearing, like a small character or a tribal shield. I like the ease with which Fin resolves the interior of the circle: a few gestural lines and dots are enough to give it volume and texture, preventing it from being a boring, flat blob. It's a work that demonstrates that you don't need a huge canvas to have presence; it has a powerful "graphic" quality that holds your gaze.
