MONTSE PIÑOL | ABSTRACT COMPOSITION "VIOLET ATMOSPHERE" | LYRICAL ABSTRACTION / DRIPPING | OIL ON CANVAS
A sensory immersion in color and matter, where the dripping technique creates a vibrant and profound emotional cartography.
HISTORY AND CURATORIAL ANALYSIS
Created in 2014, this work by Montse Piñol delves into the realms of lyrical abstraction and material informalism. The artist abandons recognizable form to focus on the pure expressiveness of the pigment. The painting does not represent an external reality, but rather is reality itself: a battleground of textures, densities, and gravity.
Visually, the work is constructed through a superposition of layers. The background seems to evoke a dreamlike or cosmic landscape dominated by deep blues, indigos, and stormy violets. Upon this atmospheric base, Piñol intervenes decisively using mixed media techniques:
-
The Dripping: In the lower right area, the orange and ochre paint drips vertically, breaking the horizontality of the composition and providing a kinetic energy reminiscent of Action Painting .
-
Textures and Traces: In the central left area, we observe reticular or mesh patterns that suggest the use of templates or negative stenciling, creating a white and grayish bone structure that floats on the dark background.
The use of color is bold and effective. Accents of fluorescent orange vibrate intensely through complementary contrast against the blues and purples, creating points of electric light that guide the eye through the density of the patchwork.
WHY IS THIS PIECE AN OPPORTUNITY?
-
Decorative Power: This is a piece with character. The combination of violets and oranges is sophisticated and modern, ideal for spaces that need a focal point of energy (a minimalist living room, a creative office).
-
Technical Complexity: It is not a flat abstraction. There is physical depth in the canvas; the different phases of the painting, the glazes and the impasto, are visible, which denotes an elaborate work and not the result of chance.
-
Versatile Format: At 60.5 x 50 cm, it is the perfect size to stand alone on a narrow wall or to be part of a larger composition without losing prominence.
-
Contemporary style: Unlike classic landscaping, this work speaks the language of contemporary design. It brings instant modernity to any room.

THE WORKSHOP NOTE
I chose this work for its magnetism. There are abstractions that are mere noise, but this one has music. I'm fascinated by how the orange "bleeds" onto the blue, creating a very attractive visual tension. It's like looking through a fogged window at a city at night or at a nebula. Montse Piñol demonstrates here that she knows how to control the unexpected; the dripping isn't random, it's placed exactly where the composition needs it to breathe.
