The architecture identifies the view as Collioure in Occitanie, France. The silhouette of Notre-Dame-des-Anges church extending into the sea and the castle’s profile dominate the background, recalling the town’s association with the beginnings of Fauvism.
Martine Foissier uses a Post-Impressionist and Neo-Fauvist language. Firm, calligraphic black lines, close to Cloisonnism, structure the foreground Catalan boat, architecture and waves. Broad, rapid, textured acrylic strokes fill this framework. Cool cerulean water contrasts with the red boat and an orange sun rendered as a schematic spiral, giving the composition movement.
