An ink landscape with a group of trees set against fields and gently rising ground.

The synthesis of landscape and the expressionist stroke

Anita Solà Imbert organizes this landscape around the vertical rhythm of the trees. The drawing combines firm outlines, short marks and darker areas against a broad expanse of unmarked paper.

The thicker trunks in the foreground contrast with slender trees farther back. Horizontal and sloping lines describe the fields, while scattered dark marks suggest the foliage.

The mastery of "negative space"

The areas of unmarked paper separate the trunks and branches and keep the upper half of the composition open. Closer marks and small patches of hatching give the ground and trees their texture.

The vertical trunks guide the eye towards the scattered foliage in the upper half. Below, the horizontal field boundaries and sloping paths establish depth. The contrast between open paper and dense black marks gives each tree its distinct shape.
