Flowers, light, and matter

Against an almost dematerialized background, a small white vase holds a bouquet that occupies a good part of the composition. The flowers, also white, are barely separated from the space that surrounds them: it is the relief of the paint, the small orange centers, and the bluish shadows that allow each one to appear before the gaze.

Antonio López de los Mozos constructs the still life using a particularly restrained palette. Whites, pearly grays, muted greens, and highly diluted blues dominate the upper part, while ochres and warm earth tones form the surface upon which the vessel rests. The small red and orange nuclei of the flowers act as points of intensity within a deliberately serene composition.

The painting does not seek a precise botanical description. Leaves, stems, and petals are formed through patches, scraping, and brushstrokes that in some places leave the image almost unfinished. In the main flowers, however, the material accumulates until it acquires true relief, causing light to physically strike the oil paint.

The vase occupies the lower axis of the composition and functions as a simple, almost geometric form. Its whiteness connects with the flowers and the background, while a fine blue line barely defines its base. This reduction of objects to essential volumes allows one to understand one of López de los Mozos' most personal characteristics: the balance between a perfectly recognizable reality and a progressive simplification of forms.

The result is an intimate and luminous still life, where the paint matters as much as that which it represents.

Antonio López de los Mozos — Between figuration, geometry, and color

Antonio López de los Mozos Fernández (Manzanares, 1932 – Cinco Casas, 1991) developed a career that encompassed painting, drawing, engraving, and sculpture.

His approach to art began in his youth and was consolidated alongside the painter Antonio Iniesta. Later, he obtained a UNESCO scholarship that allowed him to travel to Paris and study the Impressionist tradition directly. He also traveled through various European countries and maintained an activity linked to graphic design and silkscreen printing.

Although he started from academic premises, his painting evolved toward a much more personal interpretation of reality. The geometrization of forms, a certain neo-cubist sensitivity, and, especially, the expressive use of color gained increasing weight in his production.

He exhibited individually from the late 1960s onward and developed an exhibition trajectory mainly between Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid. His figure also remains closely linked to the artistic culture of Manzanares, where his work has continued to be part of exhibitions and tributes decades after his passing.

A still life pushed toward synthesis

This work is particularly interesting because López de los Mozos does not construct the flowers using closed contours.

The bouquet appears and disappears against the background. Some leaves are reduced to simple green-blue patches; certain petals almost blend in with the surface; others stand out through much denser white impasto.

This combination of definition and loss of contour introduces an atmospheric quality unusual in a traditional still life. The scene remains fully figurative, but the painterly material begins to acquire autonomy.

The wide empty space located to the right also balances the concentration of the bouquet and avoids an excessively ornamental composition. It is not just a painting of flowers: it is also a study of whites, textures, and silences.

Studio Note — Painting white

What interests us most about this work is a difficulty that may go unnoticed at first glance: almost everything happens within the white.

The vase, the flowers, and a good part of the background share a very close range. López de los Mozos must therefore construct the image through temperature, texture, and small changes in tonality.

The orange centers make the flowers appear; the blues define the vessel; the barely suggested greens allow one to discover the leaves.

It is a small and silent work, yet carefully balanced, in which the artist transforms a traditional motif into an exercise of matter and color.
