Baldomer Gràcia Cardús (1910–1981) was a multifaceted artist—painter and poet—with a career deeply linked to the Catalan artistic context of the 20th century. Although he is known for his mastery of various disciplines, it is in his painting that he displays his most daring technical freedom. In this piece, the artist uses a vigorous, almost sculptural brushstroke to construct the face.

The work is a study of contrasts where dabs of pure color—intense blues, emerald greens, and vibrant reds—are applied directly onto the support with hardly any dilution, creating a surface with marked relief. The face, built through black strokes that define the bone structure and features, seems to emerge from a forest of color. This technique not only gives the piece a three-dimensional quality, but also endows the portrait with a deep, almost primal psychological introspection, reminiscent of the force of Fauvism or figurative Expressionism. The author's handwritten signature appears in the lower-left corner and it includes a dedication/signature on the reverse, inscriptions that provide information about the piece.
