A time capsule of Catalan graphic humor from the 80s. This original ink drawing skillfully and bitingly captures the festive atmosphere of the era, using local customs and the aesthetics of underground comics to immortalize a private event in the center of Barcelona.
History and Curatorial Analysis
The work is an excellent example of the craft of a ninotaire or satirical cartoonist in Catalonia during the Transition and the 80s. Explicitly dated June 13, 1985, and located at Diputació street 378 in Barcelona, the scene recreates a wedding event treated as if it were a national breaking news story.
The anonymous author displays an absolute mastery of clear line art and choral caricature. The composition is full of visual and textual gags in Catalan: from neighbors gossiping on balconies to a mobile unit of the newly established TV3 (inaugurated just a couple of years earlier) covering the "heroes'" exit. The speech bubble dialogues reflect the slang and irreverence typical of satirical magazines of the time, approaching marriage with irony. In the lower-left corner are grouped the handwritten signatures (Estruch, Isabel, Eulalia...) corresponding to "La Penya," the group of friends or colleagues who commissioned and gifted this illustration.
Reasons for the collection
-
Pop and Customary Witness: The appearance of the TV3 camera, references to Barça, and the characters' fashion make it a hilarious sociological document of Barcelona in 1985.
-
Original Graphic Humor: Far from being a printed sheet, it is an ink work executed freehand, ideal for collectors of Spanish comics, satirical illustration, and urban memorabilia.
-
Conversational Character: It is one of those works that forces the viewer to stop, read the speech bubbles, and smile. Its value lies not in solemnity, but in its narrative capacity and freshness.
