Original work by Carles Bros Solanes (Terrassa, 1956–Llançà, 2023), signed and dated in 2007, created using mixed media on cardstock. The composition combines intense surfaces of blue and orange-yellow with gestural black strokes and an integrated fragment of printed musical notation.

The layering of pigments, chromatic contrasts, and freedom of the stroke construct an image of remarkable dynamism, in which music and painting share the spotlight.

The language of color and music

The composition is structured by a large blue surface at the bottom and a horizontal black stripe that dominates the upper area. Between them appears a fragment of a musical score, partially covered by pictorial interventions.

The brushstrokes, pigment drags, and irregular textures introduce a material dimension characteristic of Bros's work. The contrast between the precision of musical writing and the spontaneity of the painterly gesture constitutes one of the work’s main attractions.

Carles Bros and artistic experimentation

Carles Bros was a Catalan painter, sculptor, and cultural manager linked to the Empordà, whose career combined contemporary painting, experimentation with materials, and various projects related to the Mediterranean and music.

His work is characterized by the use of highly luminous pigments, mixed media, collages, and surfaces with marked texture. He exhibited at institutions such as the Maritime Museum of Barcelona, the Mediterranean Museum, and various art centers in Europe and Asia.

Music also occupied a relevant place in his production. Among his projects, the pictorial interpretation of Paganini's 24 Caprices, developed in collaboration with violinist Ala Voronkova, stands out.

Dated 2007, this composition relates to that interest in translating musical language into the visual realm, although it has not been possible to determine if it belongs to a specific series.

Workshop Note

We especially highlight the incorporation of a musical score into an abstract composition with a strong chromatic presence. The combination of printed notation, pigments, and spontaneous strokes reflects a characteristic aspect of Carles Bros's experimentation, in which different artistic languages meet on the same surface.
