Watercolor dated 1940 and signed "Bécquer," attributed to the painter and illustrator Carlos Bécquer Domínguez (Barcelona, 1889–1968). The composition depicts a staircase ascending between examples of vernacular architecture, animated by a female figure moving towards the background.

The work stands out for its spontaneous treatment of light, the transparency of the colors, and the ability to suggest the materiality of the walls and steps through brushstrokes of great expressive economy.

Vernacular architecture and plein air painting

The staircase organizes the entire composition, guiding the gaze into the interior of a town with narrow streets and traditional buildings. The whitewashed walls, tiled roofs, and small entryways are defined through a combination of ochre, gray, and earth tones, with subtle reddish and bluish accents.

The human figure, introduced with a few dark brushstrokes, provides scale and life to the scene. The artist takes advantage of the white of the paper to represent the incidence of light on the architecture, reserving the most intense tones for the shadows and structural elements.

Carlos Bécquer and the tradition of the urban sketch

Carlos Bécquer Domínguez was a Catalan painter, draftsman, poster artist, and illustrator, the grandson of painter Valeriano Bécquer and great-nephew of the poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer.

Artistically trained between Madrid and Barcelona, he spent part of his career in Paris, where he collaborated with the Hachette publishing house and particularly cultivated illustration. His body of work encompasses animal studies, scenes of daily life, and urban views, with a special focus on the direct observation of everyday life.

The present watercolor, dated 1940, relates to this aspect of his work, in which synthetic drawing and the fluidity of color allow for capturing the atmosphere of traditional urban spaces.

Workshop Note

We are particularly interested in how the staircase becomes the true axis of the composition. The use of paper reserves and transparent brushstrokes allows for the construction of a luminous scene without resorting to rigid architectural drawing. The date of 1940 places this watercolor within a period of intense exhibition activity for Carlos Bécquer in Barcelona.
