A masculine face with a broad forehead, mustache, and beard occupies almost the entire sheet. The drawing dispenses with a background and any accessory elements: a few lines are enough to construct the gaze, the outline of the head, the beard, and the collar of the shirt with a tie.
Identifying the figure as Juan Ramón Jiménez (1881–1958) is particularly likely for two reasons. On one hand, the physical features match the poet's habitual image in photographs and portraits from his maturity. On the other, the work is dated exactly to 1981, the year the centenary of his birth was commemorated and numerous tributes, exhibitions, and publications dedicated to his figure were organized.
The Work
The portrait is executed in black ink on paper, with a clean and direct line. The author barely uses shading: volume is built through the outline and small groups of parallel lines in the beard, hair, and neck.
Attention is concentrated on the face. The slightly sunken eyes, the clear forehead, and the pointed beard give the character a serious and contemplative expression that fits well with the most widespread iconography of Juan Ramón Jiménez.
The drawing is signed in the lower area “Cristóbal, 81”. So far, it has not been possible to identify the author's surname with certainty. The signature and chronology, however, clearly place the work in the context of the early eighties.
The coincidence between the date and the centenary of Juan Ramón Jiménez is particularly significant. Born in Moguer in 1881 and awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1956, Juan Ramón was the subject of numerous commemorative events during 1981. Therefore, it is reasonable to interpret this small portrait as a work created in relation to that anniversary, although there is no documentation that allows for a definitive confirmation.

Workshop Note
What makes this small piece especially interesting is the date.
The drawing was made in 1981, exactly one hundred years after the birth of Juan Ramón Jiménez. Added to the resemblance of the character —clear forehead, beard, mustache, and stern expression—, the centenary offers a very convincing context to interpret the work as a commemorative portrait of the poet.
The authorship still remains open: we only know the signature “Cristóbal”. Precisely for this reason, we have chosen to preserve all information visible in the work without turning a reasonable hypothesis into a definitive attribution.
