Composition and technique

In this canvas, Monrós draws on urban art and Neo-Expressionism. The composition divides the painting into two broad visual fields: on the left, the ghostly, empty framework of a boat, painted with gestural strokes and drips; on the right, a human figure enclosed by geometric structures recalling a labyrinth or a confined space. Oil paint is combined with what appear to be spray and stencil techniques, creating a surface of textures and layers that echoes the complexity of the subject.

Palette and light

Colour provides the emotional focus of the painting. Monrós creates a strong contrast between the surroundings and the individual. Greys, blacks and a greenish blue with industrial, melancholy associations dominate the background, punctuated by fluorescent green. In contrast, the man's skin becomes a field of blues, violets, yellows and oranges, suggesting a light from within. Rather than an external source, the figure's contained energy seems to illuminate the scene.

Context and meaning

The title, “S’homu que no tenía barca” (“The man who had no boat”), invites a symbolic reading. In a Mediterranean context, a boat can suggest freedom, livelihood and travel; its absence becomes a metaphor for being stranded before an unreachable horizon. Yet the figure appears deeply concentrated, almost curled into a foetal position, rather than defeated. The scene can be read as an image of resilience: when outward movement is blocked, exploration turns inward.
