A female figure, seen from behind with her head slightly turned, is the protagonist of this evocative composition rendered in shades of black and gray. Her body, partially covered by a fabric that descends in ample folds, emerges from a background of angular shapes, shadows, and geometric motifs that introduce an expressive and decorative dimension.

The drawing stands out for the softness of its anatomical modeling, especially in the shoulders and back, and for the contrast between the organic lines of the body and the fragmented structure of the surroundings. The absence of color focuses all attention on the relationships between light, volume, and texture.

The female figure and the construction of space

The female nude has been one of the great subjects of the Western artistic tradition, from academic anatomy studies to the freer, more experimental interpretations developed during the 20th century.

In this work, the artist moves away from the conventional study of the nude through a composition that combines naturalism and geometry. The figure is presented from behind, with her hair visually gathered into a mass of curved strokes that directs the gaze toward the upper part of the drawing.

The back and shoulders receive delicate treatment, built from tonal gradations that suggest volume without resorting to overly defined contours.

The background, by contrast, is organized by triangles, vertical bands, and dark patches of irregular texture. These shapes establish a dialogue with the female silhouette and endow the composition with a scenographic character, situated between figurative study and decorative interpretation.

Charcoal treatment

The work features elaborate chiaroscuro, apparently executed in charcoal or black pencil, with an alternation of dry strokes and smudged areas.

The construction of the hair is especially interesting, resolved through overlapping curved lines that suggest its direction and volume. In contrast, the skin is represented through soft transitions, preserving large light areas that take advantage of the luminosity of the support itself.

The folds of the fabric introduce new diagonals into the composition, while the background patches provide depth and movement.

The ensemble reveals a particular attention to the balance between illuminated surfaces and shaded areas, as well as to the expressive possibilities of monochromatic drawing.

The signature

In the lower right corner, there appears a uniquely styled signature, with a large initial, small intermediate signs, and a crossed flourish that adds a distinctive graphic detail to the composition.

Studio Note

The modeling of the back and hip is constructed with soft transitions between light areas and shadows. In the hair, curved lines and darker strokes make the direction of the drawing visible.

The triangular shapes and background patches contrast with the contours of the figure. The folds that descend along the legs introduce diagonals and connect the seated posture with the lower part of the composition.
