A direct and light-filled work that captures the essence of nomadic customs. This oil painting by Domingo Campoy stands out for its agile brushwork and vibrant palette, offering an intimate glimpse into a traditional scene through the filter of Spanish Post-Impressionism.

History and Curatorial Analysis

Domingo Campoy is a painter rooted in the figurative and costumbrista tradition, strongly influenced by the Valencian and Catalan schools of the 20th century, where the capture of natural light and the freshness of color prevail over strict academic rigor. In "Gitanets" (titled by the artist himself on the reverse of the stretcher), Campoy presents a family group resting by a caravan.

The technical execution is quick and decisive. The artist uses a light impasto and very loose strokes to sketch the vegetation and clothing, focusing attention on the amiable expressions of the characters. The color palette, dominated by luminous greens, off-whites, and earth tones, breathes the warm air of the Mediterranean. A detail that gives the piece a unique and unrepeatable character is the handwritten dedication in the lower left corner: "To my friend Fernando with affection", which indicates that we are looking at a personal exchange piece, probably gifted directly from the artist's studio to his close circle.

Reasons for collection

  • Documentary Authenticity: The personal dedication and the handwritten title on the reverse ("Gitanets") give it a traceability and an emotional component absent in purely commercial works.

  • Plastic Agility: It is an excellent example of alla prima painting, where the intuition of color and the looseness of the brush construct the visual volume of the scene.

  • Nostalgic Aesthetic: The costumbrista theme is a refuge value in classical collecting, ideal for bringing warmth and a touch of history to any space.

Technical Data Sheet

  • Artist: Domingo Campoy.

  • Title: Gitanets (titled on the reverse).

  • Theme: Costumbrismo / Figure scene.

  • Technique: Oil on canvas.

  • Dimensions: 46 x 38 cm (8F format).

  • Condition: The work requires attention. It presents polychromy losses (chips and paint layer losses) visible on the outer margins (probably due to rubbing from an old frame) and in the lower left area, affecting the figure of the girl and part of the dedication. The canvas remains taut on its original stretcher. We recommend carefully reviewing the photographic report, as it faithfully reflects the current state of the piece and is binding.

  • Includes: Professional packaging and transport insurance. (Unframed work).

The Workshop's Note

This is one of those pieces with a living history. It is not an immaculate gallery canvas, but a gift between friends that has lived through decades. The paint losses it presents are the natural scars of its trajectory, but they do not diminish an iota of the luminous freshness with which Campoy painted this family. For lovers of restoration or art in its most genuine and wild state, it is a fantastic opportunity to acquire an oil painting with a signature and a soul.
