Late 19th-century costumbrista drawing depicting a crowded popular celebration, with numerous couples dancing, families, children, and passersby gathered in a festive outdoor space. The composition, rendered in ink and sepia wash, is notable for its abundance of figures and the attention paid to their gestures, attire, and attitudes.
A scene of 19th-century popular life
In the foreground, several groups of couples participate in the dance while other attendees converse or observe the celebration. To the right, a child holds a hoop; toward the background appear a pavilion with a conical roof, an attraction structure, and various buildings that situate the scene in a fairground or outdoor festival.
The female figures wear long dresses cinched at the waist, with hats and headpieces typical of the fashion of the final third of the 19th century. The men appear in jackets, vests, and various types of hats, while the presence of children and vendors helps to recreate the atmosphere of a massive celebration.
The artist organizes the numerous figures through a staggered distribution of groups, alternating foregrounds of greater intensity with figures barely sketched in the distance. The brown washes provide depth and volume, while the precise drawing defines the faces, fabrics, and movements.
Between costumbrismo and illustration
Due to its narrative character and the meticulousness of the composition, the piece is stylistically related to the tradition of 19th-century costumbrista illustration, especially developed in magazines and graphic publications.
In the lower right corner, it retains a signature that could be read as "La Cerda," though the author's identity has not been confirmed. In the upper margin, there is also an old inscription, written faintly in pencil, whose reading remains open.
These characteristics make the work particularly interesting as a graphic testimony of the spaces of leisure and sociability of the late 19th century.
