The Taller Note

The gaze behind the glasses and the slight smile give the portrait an approachable tone. The blue suit stands out against a dark green background, while the shirt and papers provide the lightest areas. Below, the hand and its reflection on the table connect the figure to the objects around him. The plaque on the frame identifies the sitter and records his birth and death dates.

Composition and technique

The figure is seated with his face turned and papers held over a table. The modelling of the face and hand is combined with more visible brushwork in the jacket and background. Folds in the suit, the pattern of the tie and reflections on the table introduce different textures within a composition centred on the sitter.

Palette and light

The blues and greys of the suit contrast with the warm tones of the face and hand. The shirt and papers stand out in off-white against the dark background. Light focuses attention on the features and leaves part of the figure in shadow, giving volume to the portrait.

The plaque identifies Don Ramón N. García-Nieto Paris and records the dates “21 MAYO 1931 - 16 JUNIO 1978”. The painting is signed “FRANCISCO RIBERA” and dated “MCMLXXX” (1980), placing it after the date of death indicated on the plaque.
