About the artist

Frans Geerts, also known as Franz or François Geerts, was a Belgian academic painter associated with the Flemish figurative tradition. From 1880 to 1886 he studied at Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts under Lucas Victor Schaefels. His subjects included portraits, genre scenes, religious themes, landscapes and still lifes, principally in oil, but also watercolour and drawing.

His work remained linked to realist and romantic traditions, with attention to narrative and small formats. Alongside his own compositions he made interpretations and copies after earlier masters, a customary academic study practice. He worked for much of his life around Antwerp and Borgerhout, where he lived for decades.
