Ginés Serrán Pagán (Ceuta, 1949) is an anthropologist-artist, a nomad who has crossed the globe from New York to the villages of China, searching for a universal language. This work, dated and localized manually as "La Habana, III/87" (March 1987), is not a simple landscape; it is an "archeology of the moment." Serrán Pagán does not paint what he sees, but what he feels: the charged atmosphere, the humidity, and the history accumulated on the walls of the Caribbean.

Visually, the piece is presented as an old document or a found map. The artist has treated the paper with washes of ochre, sienna, and earth to simulate premature aging, evoking the patina of the flaking colonial walls of Old Havana. On this atmospheric base, he constructs a central composition enclosed in an irregular black frame, where graphics reminiscent of ancient calligraphy, flags, or frayed boat sails float.

The technique is a complex mixed media on paper. What I love about this piece is that it doesn't look like it was made yesterday; it looks salvaged. Serrán Pagán has the gift of aging paper so that it tells stories.
