Original watercolor by Guillem Fresquet Bardina dedicated to the Catalan rural landscape, featuring a small stone church or hermitage situated among mountains and two figures moving along a path.
The architecture occupies the center of the composition, standing out against a landscape constructed through successive planes of greens, blues, and earth tones. Fresquet makes particularly effective use of the transparency inherent in watercolor to separate the rocky foreground from the mountains in the background and produce a marked sense of depth.
The landscape in the work of Guillem Fresquet
Guillem Fresquet developed much of his career around watercolor, a technique in which he achieved significant recognition within 20th-century Catalan painting.
His production includes landscapes, villages, ports, markets, urban scenes, and rural motifs. In 1968, he also received recognition at the Villa de Palamós Painting Prize for a watercolor titled Sargint xarxes, whose technical mastery was already highlighted by critics of the time.
The present work belongs precisely to this landscape tradition.
The composition is structured around a path that enters the landscape diagonally and visually leads toward the church. The two small figures introduce a human scale and break the stillness of the scene.
Light, stone, and atmospheric depth
The foreground is constructed using energetic brushstrokes of gray, blue, green, and earth tones that describe the rock without the need for a closed drawing.
The church, executed in brownish and grayish tones, serves as the visual center. Above it, the bell tower is silhouetted against a sky that is practically left as blank paper.
In the background, Fresquet progressively reduces the contrast and uses bluish washes to represent the mountains, resorting to a classic procedure of atmospheric perspective especially suitable for watercolor.
The work shows a fluid and confident execution, with ample areas of the paper itself used as an active part of the composition.

The Workshop Note
A very representative watercolor of Guillem Fresquet's landscape production, with a particularly balanced composition and an attractive combination of architecture, mountain, and human figure.
Noteworthy is the technical economy with which the artist manages to separate the different planes: the rocks in the foreground appear defined by firm brushstrokes, while the mountain landscape progressively dissolves through soft bluish transparencies.
The church and the two travelers turn a simple rural view into a narrative scene, characteristic of the mid-20th-century Catalan landscape tradition.
