Heber Luis Gil — “Chimera” — Surrealist Heberist Landscape — Oil on Canvas

Oil on canvas (73 × 50 cm) signed by Heber Luis Gil Ameijeiras (Heber L. Gil) and created in Barcelona in May 2012. Titled Chimera by the artist himself, the work transforms the landscape through an intense chromatic construction dominated by a large concentric star, geometric shapes, and a nature deliberately removed from conventional representation.

A landscape between the real and the imagined

The title Chimera offers an interesting key for approaching the work. The landscape maintains recognizable elements—horizon, vegetation, palm trees, water, and sky—but the artist alters their proportions and colors until they become an autonomous reality. The large luminous circle dominates the composition like an impossible sun, while the blue and yellow shapes of the sky acquire an almost architectural dimension.

This transformation of the everyday into an imaginary territory connects directly with the language that Heber L. Gil himself termed “Heberista,” characterized by intensely chromatic landscapes and atmospheres that seek to suggest worlds different from our own.

Color as protagonist

The composition is organized through large fields of green, blue, violet, and yellow. The color does not aim to faithfully reproduce nature, but to construct the sensation of a strange and luminous space.

The contrast between the intense green foreground and the bluish depth of the sky immediately draws the eye toward the large central star. The small palm trees, dwarfed by the vastness of the landscape, further accentuate the sense of immensity and strangeness.

Studio Note

What interests us most about Chimera is the strange calm it produces. At first glance, we recognize a landscape; a few seconds later, something stops fitting together.

The sun seems too large, the sky turns almost into architecture, and the intensity of the green places the scene in a territory difficult to locate. That border between landscape and fantasy sums up the “Heberista” universe of Heber L. Gil particularly well.

Furthermore, we rarely find a contemporary work so well-documented: title, date, place, and cataloging remain written by the artist himself on the reverse, keeping its traceability intact.
