The painter of solitude and the avant-garde

Isidre Nonell (1872-1911) is, without a doubt, one of the most captivating and defining figures in Catalan art of the early 20th century. A prominent member of the Els Quatre Gats tavern, his work was the cornerstone that allowed the transition from realism to a raw and psychological modernity. This image, originally dated 1906, represents the zenith of his thematic obsession: the figure of the Gypsy woman. Far from folkloric vision, Nonell portrays them as blocks of melancholy and resistance. His influence was so profound that Pablo Picasso himself directly drew from this somber palette and these monumental volumes to bring to life his famous Blue Period.

Volume through the drape

In this composition, the artist presents a woman seen from behind, completely enveloped in a heavy cloak. It is a lesson in visual economy; Nonell does not need the face to convey the emotional burden of the model. The drawing constructs an almost architectural volume through the use of energetic contours and shading that seems to sculpt the paper.
