The fishing trade in sepia

The composition shows two barefoot fisherwomen on the sand. The figure on the left holds a basket of fish; the one on the right carries a tray on her head. Boats, the sea and the background landscape frame the scene.

Sepia and the printed surface

Monochrome sepia ink gives the scene a warm tone and brings out the volumes and textures of clothing and fish scales.

The Taller Note

Sepia unites figures and seascape in one tonal range. Pale faces, arms and aprons stand out against blouses and water; lines in the basket and fish texture the foreground. Both figures look right, and the raised tray extends the composition upwards.
