Matter as the expressive protagonist

J. Grau Ribero (Castellón, 1964) is an exponent of textured painting in current Spanish art. Following the tradition of the great masters of informalism, Ribero substitutes figurative representation with a deep investigation into weight, density, and texture. The artist experiments with earths and binders to create highly textured surfaces, transforming the canvas into a physical object that interacts with space and light in an almost sculptural way.

Contrast between organic chaos and rational geometry

The composition is articulated by a strong central core floating on a neutral background. The base of the work is a magmatic mass of deep black, worked with incising tools to create grooves and ridges. Over this darkness, Ribero applies silver areas that capture ambient light, creating changing glints depending on the viewing angle. Visual balance is achieved by introducing three cadmium orange rectangles; this pure geometry asserts itself over the chaos of matter, endowing the piece with a modern and balanced tension.
