Original watercolor by Joan Fuster Gimpera dedicated to the Mediterranean maritime landscape, one of the great motifs of his artistic production. From an elevated viewpoint, the composition brings together small boats moored at the dock, whitewashed vernacular architecture, and Mediterranean vegetation.
The luminosity of the piece, dominated by blues, ochres, greens, and whites, conveys the serene atmosphere of the old fishing villages of the Catalan coast.
The Mediterranean of Joan Fuster
The landscape of the Empordà was one of the essential axes in the trajectory of Joan Fuster Gimpera. Harbors, boats, beaches, and small coastal villages appear repeatedly in a production especially linked to the Empordà territory.
In this work, the artist observes the harbor from an elevated position. The diagonal of the dock guides the gaze toward the background while the boats follow one another along the coastline.
The white buildings and ochre roofs form the central core of the composition, traversed vertically by a stylized cypress that adds depth and balances the predominance of the horizontal lines.
Light and synthesis through watercolor
Fuster uses watercolor with remarkable economy of means. Wide clear reserves build the facades, while bluish and greenish washes create the shadows and separate the different architectural planes.
The boats are rendered through brief and contrasted brushstrokes, sufficient to define their forms without losing the spontaneity characteristic of the technique.
The result is a luminous and direct interpretation of the Mediterranean landscape, where descriptive precision is subordinated to the capture of light and atmosphere.
Joan Fuster i Gimpera (Torroella de Montgrí, 1917–2011) was a painter, draftsman, and especially a watercolorist. Self-taught, he received guidance from artists such as Josep Maria Mascort and Ramon Reig i Corominas.
His production was deeply linked to the landscape of the Empordà and the Costa Brava. Although he later developed a fantastic and surreal aspect that he called estrambotismo, he maintained an important landscape and maritime production throughout his career.

The Studio's Note
A work especially representative of the most luminous and Mediterranean facet of Joan Fuster Gimpera.
The elevated perspective allows the artist to bring together in a single scene the essential elements of the old coastal landscape: boats, dock, whitewashed houses, warm-toned roofs, and Mediterranean vegetation.
The watercolor stands out for its freshness and for a clear palette that fully preserves the feeling of light on the coastline. A piece with a very convenient format and a theme that is especially recognizable within the artist's production.
