The weight of the surnames and the vocation for drawing

Joan Granados Llimona (Barcelona, 1931 - Sant Joan les Fonts, 2005) is an artist whose signature bears the weight of history: he is the grandson of the celebrated composer Enric Granados and the great master of modernist painting Joan Llimona. Trained at the Llotja de Barcelona and the School of Fine Arts of Olot, Granados Llimona stood out for not succumbing to the dictatorship of oil painting, vindicating charcoal and pencil drawing as a major and absolutely autonomous discipline. In this large-format work, the artist presents a three-quarter female portrait, where the model, with her head subtly covered, immerses her gaze in a deep introspection.

Economy of means and expressiveness

Technically, the drawing is an exercise in restraint and elegance. Executed in graphite pencil, the author displays the loose, rapid, and confident stroke that defines the great academic draftsmen of the Barcelona School. Instead of seeking aseptic hyperrealism, Granados Llimona captures volume and character through decisive lines. He applies energetic and hatched shading to the neck and background, deliberately leaving the planes of the face clean to highlight natural light and accentuate the atmosphere of serene melancholy that envelops the figure.
