Original watercolor by the Catalan painter Joaquim Cabané Manauta (Barcelona, 1922–1993), signed in the lower right corner, depicting a peaceful harbor scene with boats moored near the entrance to a Mediterranean port.

The composition brings together various types of vessels: a traditional fishing boat, a small motorboat, and a white sailboat that occupies much of the foreground. Further away appear other dark-hulled sailboats, while on the horizon, two beacons located on the breakwaters mark the harbor entrance.

The artist resolves the scene through a watercolor of great transparency and chromatic delicacy. The waters, painted with soft bluish and greenish washes, reflect the hulls and masts through brief, discontinuous brushstrokes. The dark reflections of the boats contrast with the luminosity of the whole, creating a sense of depth and stillness.

Especially interesting is the treatment of the small nautical details: the mooring lines, the deck structures, the furled sails, and the boats resting on the water. These elements reveal an attentive observation of the port environment, without diminishing the spontaneity of the pictorial language.

The sky, barely differentiated from the horizon through light tonal variations, reinforces the spatial amplitude and serenity of the composition.

The work is an attractive example of Joaquim Cabané Manauta's maritime landscape painting, characterized by his sensitivity to Mediterranean light, the atmospheric treatment of the landscape, and the use of chromatic transparencies.

The Workshop Note

This watercolor stands out for the meticulousness with which Joaquim Cabané represents the boats and their nautical elements, combined with the extraordinary lightness of the treatment of the water.

The composition finds its balance between the traditional boat in the foreground, the white sailboat, and the dark vessels distributed in the distance. The soft reflections, the greenish-blue tones, and the expanse of the horizon convey a marked sense of calm.

A seascape especially attractive for its compositional clarity and for the delicate treatment of light.
