HISTORY AND CURATORIAL ANALYSIS
The Mastery of Lyrical Landscape and High Mountains
Jordi Pagans i Montsalvatge (1932-2017) is one of the essential figures for understanding contemporary Catalan lyrical figuration. While he is widely recognized for his capture of Mediterranean light, in this composition the artist turns towards the introspection of the high mountain landscape, evoking the majesty of the Pyrenees. Pagans articulates the work around a solid visual anchor in the foreground: a rural stone architecture flanked by the bareness of a winter tree. From this human scale, the viewer's gaze is drawn to the immensity of the terraced slopes and the peaks that blur into the frozen atmosphere in the background.
Visual Narrative and the Workshop's Intervention
Technically, the bite of the plate reveals an extremely delicate drawing, capable of synthesizing the roughness of the stone, the texture of the slope, and the fragility of the branches through subtle cross-hatching. The brilliance of this print, however, lies in its chromatic intervention. Pagans manually colors the piece by applying light washes: warm and ochre tones on the building's roofs that contrast with a subtle veil of grays and blues in the sky and the peaks. In the right margin, the handwritten pencil note "PAGANS (AFEGIT BLAV.)" (blue added) becomes a fascinating documentary testimony; it is a direct technical instruction from the workshop that confirms the artist's conscious search to enhance the winter atmosphere of this particular specimen.
