The physical tension of Informalism

José Manuel Legazpi (Asturias, 1943–2019) often explored forms suggestive of geological calm. In this panel, he develops a more direct, visceral approach. The interest lies in physical impact rather than figurative narrative: a flat, neutral grey ground isolates the central mass and concentrates the composition's energy.

Red as an anchor and the scratched surface

A strong carmine-red area interrupts the deep blacks and off-white strokes, becoming a form that asserts its space and steadies the composition.

Thick palette-knife impasto alternates with sgraffito, scratching through still-wet paint to reveal the ground. These incisions give the dark mass a rapid rhythm and structure the surface.

The Taller Note
