Observation from behind the barrera and the choral scene

This original intaglio print shows us the enormous versatility of the Catalan master Josep M.ª Draper. The composition places us in the middle of the bullfight, but avoiding frontal statism to offer a highly original framing: the point of view from the alley or the barrera. In the foreground, the imposing figure of a bullfighter with his back to us acts as a visual frame, inevitably guiding the viewer's perspective towards the interior of the arena. There, a rich choral scene unfolds where several bullfighters interact, preparing themselves, an arena worker smoothing the sand, and, in the shadows of the background, the sketched figure of the bull facing another bullfighter.

The mastery of chiaroscuro and intaglio incision

On a technical level, Draper once again displays his superb mastery of the etching needle. It is fascinating to observe how the characteristic cross-hatching defines the weight and embroidery of the bullfighter's suit of lights in the foreground. This dense shading work contrasts spectacularly with the luminosity of the center of the arena and the dark shadows projected in the upper stands, giving the work exceptional spatial depth and atmosphere.
