The legacy of light and the Valencian school

Juan Valera Montoro (Monóvar, 1923) is one of the most proficient successors of the luminous Valencian pictorial tradition of the 20th century. Trained under the direct influence of masters such as Rodríguez San Clemente—himself an heir to Sorolla's style—Valera Montoro perfectly assimilated the passion for the incidence of light on bodies. In this work, the artist abandons folkloric costumbrismo to delve into one of the most demanding genres in art history: the academic nude.

The construction of volume and impasto

Far from a rigid representation, the canvas presents us with a composition of marked intimate character. Technically, it is a painting of great plastic temperament. The brushwork is loose, juicy, and bold; the artist does not draw the outline but sculpts the anatomy through the superposition of chromatic impastos. The use of a very warm palette, focused on earthy tones, ochres, and carmines for the flesh, masterfully contrasts with the neutral coolness of the background and the vibrant brushwork of the white drapery. It is an exercise in virtuosity where light seems to emanate from the model's own skin, capturing an atmosphere of serenity and classical weight.
