Oil on canvas by Laurent Casimir (1928–1990), a Haitian painter closely linked to the development of modern Haitian painting during the second half of the 20th century.

The work depicts an intertwined couple in a composition of great graphic strength. The two figures occupy practically the entire surface, organized through stylized bodies, elongated limbs, and geometric forms that intersect to build a compact and dynamic structure.

Casimir deliberately reduces the palette to whites, grays, blacks, and reddish and earthy tones. This chromatic economy makes the dark outlines, small decorative motifs, and the interplay of volumes in the clothing especially visible, while the flesh tones introduce the main warm contrast to the composition.

The faces, positioned face-to-face in the center of the scene, focus the attention and bring an intimate dimension to the whole. Around them, arms and legs extend into broad diagonals that transform the figures into an almost abstract construction.

The work is signed “CASIMIR” in the lower right corner.

About the artist

Laurent Casimir (1928–1990) was born in Anse-à-Veau, Haiti, and developed his career mainly in Port-au-Prince. During his youth, he integrated into the Haitian artistic environment that emerged around the Centre d’Art and the Foyer des Arts Plastiques.

Casimir developed an immediately recognizable language based on the stylization of the human figure, the rhythm of the compositions, and the expressive use of color. Market scenes, gatherings, celebrations, and figure compositions constitute an essential part of his production.

His work achieved wide international distribution and today appears regularly in the secondary Haitian art market, especially in the United States and Europe.

Workshop Note

This work is especially attractive for the way Casimir transforms an intimate scene into an almost geometric composition.

The bodies are not simply arranged next to each other: they cross, overlap, and adapt to one another until they completely fill the pictorial space. The long arms function as diagonals that traverse the composition, while the white garments generate large luminous surfaces that contrast with the reddish tones of the figures.

The emotional center is concentrated in the two faces confronting each other, barely separated, around which the entire painting seems to be organized. A composition that is simple in appearance, but very effective both for its formal balance and its strong visual identity.
