Copy of L'Écolier de l'Alliance Française, an illustrated fortnightly magazine from the late 19th century, corresponding to issue number 12 of its second series, dated April 15, 1899.
The publication is notable for its elaborate graphic presentation, featuring texts that appear handwritten, calligraphic ornamentation, and black illustrations on paper. It serves as an interesting testament to the cultural exchanges between France and Catalonia during the final decades of the 19th century.
The cover features a historicist-inspired design with cartouches, floral motifs, and abundant filigree. The coat of arms with the four Catalan bars stands out, integrated into an ornamental composition. It lists Jean Briquet and Jean Oriol as founders, as well as A. Escater as the director.
Inside, the texts are in French and are dedicated to language teaching, knowledge of French culture, and the activities of the Alliance Française.
The publication also incorporates figurative illustrations of notable expressiveness, including a rural work scene and a depiction of a woman on horseback.
One of the final pages brings together various graphic motifs of a popular and childlike nature, including a black cat, drawn figures, and a musical reference to the traditional Catalan song La lluna, la pruna.
Historical context
The Alliance Française was founded in Paris in 1883 with the purpose of promoting the French language and culture abroad. Barcelona hosted its first European headquarters outside of France in 1884, establishing an early institutional relationship between French culture and Catalan society.
This publication is situated within that context of cultural exchange and the dissemination of the French language, reflecting the interest in linguistic training, graphic arts, and cultural activities at the end of the 19th century.
