A romantic-inspired scene featuring two young naked women in a garden, one reclining and the other playing a guitar. The composition combines the female nude, music, and nature in an intimate and evocative image, conceived within the European taste of the mid-19th century.

Music, nature, and repose

The scene takes place in a closed, lush landscape. One of the figures appears lying on fabrics in a relaxed pose, while the second holds a guitar and directs her gaze slightly toward the outside of the composition.

Flowers, vegetation, and various objects are distributed around the figures, reinforcing the poetic tone of the scene. The roses introduce small chromatic accents, while the guitar occupies a central position and visually articulates the relationship between the two young women.

More than a simple nude study, the image constructs a narrative scene: a moment of rest, music, and conversation set in an idealized environment.

A print of the Romantic taste

The work responds to the visual language characteristic of 19th-century European prints. The delicate faces, fair complexions, enveloping vegetation, and the combination of nudity and music refer to the sentimental and decorative universe of Romanticism.

The drawing is constructed through a very fine mesh of lines and shading, especially visible in the bodies, fabrics, and vegetation. Color is incorporated over this graphic structure, used in a contained way to define complexions, flowers, vegetation, and small details.

The piece also features an inscription or possible signature within the composition, although its reading does not currently allow for the author to be identified with certainty.

Studio Note

The light figures stand out against the dark vegetation. The reclining young woman occupies a low diagonal, while the neck of the instrument rises toward the right and visually links the two figures. The folds of the fabric follow the curve of the foreground body. The roses introduce small pink accents both next to the pedestal and at the bottom, balancing the predominance of greens and browns in the garden.
