Original oil on canvas by the Catalan painter Lluís Canals Xercavins (Barcelona, 1914–1980), representative of his interest in landscape and the expressive interpretation of color.
The composition features a rural landscape traversed by a path that winds through the trees until reaching a small farmhouse with reddish roofs, situated at the foot of some mountain elevations.
In the foreground, several tree trunks rise above an undergrowth of intense greens, yellows, and small touches of orange. In the center of the scene, a tree with coppery foliage stands out, whose vibrant tone introduces the main chromatic contrast of the composition. The vegetation on the right side, rendered through violets, bluish greens, and luminous yellows, balances the ensemble and frames the rural architecture in the background.
The painting is notable for its loose and impasto brushwork, especially evident in the treatment of the trees and vegetation. Canals builds depth through the overlapping of chromatic planes, avoiding an overly detailed description of the landscape. The colors are applied with freedom, alternating small impastos of paint with areas of lighter execution.
The sky, in bluish and yellowish tones, presents curved brushstrokes that reinforce the sense of luminosity and atmospheric movement. The work as a whole reflects a post-impressionist sensibility, with a treatment of color close to the Fauvist trends that characterized part of the artist's landscape production.
About the artist
Lluís Canals Xercavins (Barcelona, 1914–1980) was a Catalan painter whose career encompassed portraiture, figure painting, and landscapes.
He began his painting activity during his youth and, starting in the 1940s, gained recognition in Barcelona's artistic circles. During the 1950s and 1960s, he developed an international exhibition career, with a presence in various European countries and the United States.
Although he initially stood out for his portraits and figurative compositions, during the 1970s he directed a good part of his production toward landscape. His painting then evolved toward greater freedom of brushstroke and a particularly expressive use of color, with post-impressionist and Fauvist influences.
In 2008, Caldes d'Estrac hosted a retrospective exhibition dedicated to his work, featuring 37 paintings representative of his artistic career.

Workshop Note
An attractive example of small-format colorist landscape painting, where the freedom of the brushstroke and chromatic intensity take center stage.
We particularly highlight the contrast between the central reddish tree, the luminous greens of the foreground, and the violets that trace the path. The painting displays a spontaneous execution and a very careful treatment of depth, which demonstrates how a composition of small dimensions can retain remarkable pictorial richness.
The work is a pair with another seascape signed by Canals, of identical format and similar framing, also belonging to our collection.
