A colourful depiction of Christ Crucified, attributed to Lucas Lorenzo (1941–2020), a Mexican artist from Xalitla, Guerrero, and a prominent figure in Mexican folk art.

The work shows Christ on the cross surrounded by roses, large vessels and an intensely coloured landscape. The artist uses strong black outlines, flat colours and a free approach to perspective, characteristic of the naïve visual language developed by the Lorenzo family.

This painting was acquired together with two other works of the same format, support and style. One is clearly signed “Lucas Lorenzo”, a circumstance that supports the attribution of this piece to the same artist or his immediate family circle.

The Taller Note

A highly personal interpretation of the Crucifixion, in which religious drama coexists with roses, vegetation and intense colours. Its shared provenance with a work signed by Lucas Lorenzo also provides a particularly interesting detail for its attribution.
