Luis Ángel Sinovas — Boats on the shore — Oil on panel

Two beached boats occupy the foreground of this seascape by Luis Ángel Sinovas. The blue of one hull connects with the water and a wide sky of light clouds.

The boats and the shore

The blue boat sits beside another in reddish and brown tones. Their gunwales and cast shadows define their contact with the sand. A rope extends towards the left edge, while the small figures beside the boats introduce a human scale.

The breadth of the sky

The low horizon leaves much of the surface to the sky, where yellowish areas alternate with blue clouds. Bands of sea continue this horizontal rhythm. In the distance, small white sails and the coastline extend the scene's depth.

The Taller Note

The boats' weight is concentrated in the lower area, while the clouds and horizon keep the upper space open. Dark shadows beneath the hulls contrast with the light sand. Blue recurs in the sky, water and main boat, connecting the different planes of the composition.
