The quest for introspective expression
Signed by M. Blanchart in 1954, this work is a resounding testament to the quality of academic drawing from the mid-century. In a time of aesthetic transition, the artist remained faithful to the rigor of life drawing, elevating charcoal from a mere sketch to a finished work of art with palpable emotional charge.
Recto: The Portrait The main piece is a frontal portrait of a young woman who embodies the feeling of melancholy. Blanchart demonstrates masterful technique in the use of charcoal; through blending, he achieves almost imperceptible tonal transitions that give the skin a velvety and soft texture. This treatment deliberately contrasts with the dark and energetic mass of the hair, which frames the face and directs attention towards a dreamy gaze. The subtle tilt of the head and the direction of the gaze into the infinite imbue the work with an almost spiritual atmosphere.
Verso: The Seated Figure On the reverse side of the sheet, we discover a second drawing: a full-body study of the same model. Unlike the recto, this is a more rapid and gestural workshop "sketch." Here Blanchart's interest focuses on the drape of the clothing and the relaxed anatomy of the clasped hands. Finding double-sided works allows us to delve into the artist's creative process, seeing how he alternates between the precision of detail and the freedom of the sketch.
