A large seascape capturing Mediterranean light and space through a luminous handling of paint and pronounced surface texture.
Signed by M. Vives Aromí, the work belongs to the tradition of Mediterranean coastal painting and is dated between the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth. Its central motif is a traditional lateen-sailed boat approaching the viewer at sunset.
The sky and sea receive contrasting treatments. The sky has a Post-Impressionist character, with flat-edged clouds and a pure cadmium-red sun recalling Japonist influences. The sea, by contrast, is painted in dense impasto. Thick, rhythmic, directional strokes build the waves and give the water a raised surface. Warm sunset reflections catch the wave crests.
