The Depth of the Color Field

In the realms of Informalism and lyrical abstraction, the greatest risk is falling into inexpressive chaos. Montse Piñol (2014) bypasses this danger through rigorous planning of the pictorial layers. The storytelling of this work does not lie in what it represents, but in how it was physically constructed. The artist first establishes an abyssal background, a dense atmosphere dominated by violets, indigos, and deep blues that give the work an immersive, almost cosmic or oceanic quality. The Friction Between the Grid and the Drip

What made me decide to incorporate this work by Piñol into the catalog is her way of taming the pictorial accident. The orange drip is not randomly placed; it falls exactly where the composition needs it so as not to appear heavy or dark. It's fascinating how that cascade of warm color bleeds onto the blue. It reminds me of the diffuse vision of a city lit through a wet windowpane. It is brave contemporary painting, executed by someone who knows that in abstraction, control of the palette is everything.
