A superb exercise in technical virtuosity and visual subtlety. This work by Penélope Andrés, dated 2016, foregoes color to concentrate on the purity of chiaroscuro, offering a composition close to abstract detail yet profoundly realistic in its execution.

History and Curatorial Analysis

Penélope Andrés (Madrid, 1970) is a distinguished Spanish painter and printmaker, with a degree in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid. Although her usual production revolves around contemporary figuration and the study of identity, in this vertical format piece the artist tackles the challenge of grisaille and the fragmentation of the motif.

The work focuses on a close-up of a satin or silk fabric, where the true protagonist is the interplay of light and shadow generated by the folds of the drapery. With exceptional mastery of monochrome watercolor, Andrés manages to capture the sheen, drape, and lightness of the fabric. The technical and visual counterpoint is located in the lower section, where the fluidity of the drapery gives way to a dense, grainy, and shiny texture, filled with small embroidered floral motifs that imitate the richness of lace or gemstones. The autograph signature and date appear handwritten in pencil on the outer courtesy mat, integrating the presentation of the work into the final ensemble.

Reasons for the collection

  • Mastery of Grisaille: The renunciation of color highlights the artist's mastery in controlling washes, transparencies, and transitions from black to pure white.

  • Contemporary Approach: The fragmentation of the scene places the work in a borderline territory between detailed realism and the geometric abstraction generated by the folds themselves.

  • Design Presentation: The strong contrast generated by the light work against the double mat (an immediate black background framing the piece and a perimeter cream mat) gives it a clean, elegant aesthetic that is very easy to integrate into contemporary art collections.

The Studio Note

This piece demonstrates that watercolor can be as striking and architectural as oil. The way Penélope Andrés resolves the drape of the fabric and contrasts it with the almost mineral texture of the embroidered base is a delight for any attentive observer. It is a silent, sophisticated work with a technical magnetism that works perfectly at close range.
