A piece of architectural presence where the material takes center stage. This large-format work by Catalan artist Pere de Ribot, dated 1991, is an excellent exercise in informel art and abstraction, combining the echo of classical antiquity with a purely contemporary and tactile language.
Pere de Ribot is a creator deeply rooted in the tradition of Catalan matter painting. In this square-format canvas (100 x 100 cm), the artist presents the schematic silhouette of a large amphora or classical vessel, accompanied on the left by the subtle profile of a second volume. The work, executed in 1991, represents a mature stage where the artist solidifies his command of the surface.
More than a figurative representation, the work is an exploration of textures. De Ribot uses thick layers of gesso, acrylic, and earthy pigments to create a surface that resembles an ancient wall or an unearthed fresco. The technique includes sgraffito (incisions on fresh material), drippings, and dense palette knife sweeps in shades of water green, off-white, and ochre. The vessel is not painted on the background but emerges from it through relief and carving, giving the piece an almost sculptural quality, similar to a bas-relief.
