A piece of architectural presence where matter takes center stage. This large-format work by Catalan artist Pere de Ribot, dated 1991, is an excellent exercise in informalism and abstraction, combining the echo of classical antiquity with a purely contemporary and tactile language.

History and Curatorial Analysis

Pere de Ribot is a creator deeply rooted in the tradition of Catalan material painting. In this square-format canvas (100 x 100 cm), the artist presents the schematic silhouette of a large classical amphora or vessel, accompanied on the left by the subtle profile of a second volume. The work, executed in 1991, represents a stage of maturity where the artist consolidates his mastery over the surface.

More than a figurative representation, the work is an exploration of textures. De Ribot uses thick layers of gesso, acrylic, and earthy pigments to create a surface that resembles an ancient wall or an unearthed fresco. The technique includes sgraffito (incisions on fresh material), drippings, and dense palette knife sweeps in shades of sea green, off-white, and ochre. The vessel is not painted on the background but emerges from it through relief and hollowing, giving the piece an almost sculptural quality, similar to a bas-relief.

Reasons for the collection

  • Impact of XXL Format: With one square meter of surface, it is a piece designed to visually anchor a space. Its format is ideal for presiding over modern living rooms, lofts, or reception areas.

  • Tactile and Luminous Richness: Thanks to its tremendous relief, the work changes dramatically depending on the room's lighting, casting real shadows on the canvas itself.

  • Warm Minimalism: Its desaturated and earthy palette perfectly fits contemporary interior design trends, such as the Wabi-Sabi style or Mediterranean minimalism, adding character without visually saturating the space.

The Workshop's Note

This is one of those paintings that demands to be seen in person to understand its true dimension. The camera barely captures the force of the relief and the elegant brutality with which the artist scratched and dragged the paste onto the canvas in 1991. It is a mature, striking, and extremely decorative work. For a collector or interior designer, pieces like this solve an entire wall with a very high level of sophistication, demonstrating that contemporary art doesn't need to shout with vibrant colors to dominate a room.
