P. Oliver — Third Triumphant Year (1939) — Mixed media on paper

An original illustration signed P. Oliver and dated 1939, depicting a group of figures in varied, brightly coloured clothing gathered before a barefoot young woman. Its humorous character, caricatural expressions and rich ornamental detail distinguish the scene.

The handwritten inscription “1939 tercer año triunfal” appears at the lower right. This historically significant wording was used by the Francoist side during the Spanish Civil War. It places the composition within a decisive period of twentieth-century Spanish history and adds a documentary dimension to its artistic interest.

Made with a combination of ink, watercolour and gouache on paper, the piece is close to the language of satirical and genre illustration of the early twentieth century.

A scene of figures and contrasts

The composition centres on six figures of varied appearance, characterised by hats, coats and clothing in different styles.

Among them are a figure in a broad blue coat with a dark collar, a character in red clothing with golden ornament, another in a brown tunic and fur hat, and a figure wearing a reddish coat with large yellow decorations.

Their exaggerated features and rosy cheeks intensify the humorous character of the group. Differences in dress, gesture and attitude suggest a gathering of social types or theatrically inspired characters.

On the right stands a barefoot young woman in a red and green skirt, a white blouse and a blue and yellow headdress. Separated from the main group, she establishes the principal narrative contrast.

The arrangement of the figures, their glances and the differences in clothing introduce a visual tension that invites us to see the composition as a small theatrical scene, full of humour and possible social allusions.

1939 and the inscription “Tercer Año Triunfal”

One of the work’s most significant elements is its handwritten inscription beside the artist’s signature: “1939 tercer año triunfal”.

During the Spanish Civil War, the Francoist authorities used “Año Triunfal”, “Segundo Año Triunfal” and “Tercer Año Triunfal” as official dating formulas.

In April 1939, following the end of the war, this last designation was officially replaced by “Año de la Victoria”.

The use of this wording in the drawing establishes a direct link with the political language of that period. Its presence is especially interesting in a caricatural composition whose figures are defined by exaggerated gestures, unusual clothing and marked theatricality.

Together, these elements make the piece an engaging visual record of Spanish graphic culture at the end of the 1930s, when illustration and caricature played an important role in depicting political and social events.

Drawing, watercolour and gouache

The work combines different graphic processes to construct the figures and enrich their clothing.

Ink drawing establishes the outlines, facial features and ornamental details. Small parallel strokes describe folds in the fabrics, coat textures and different types of footwear.

Watercolour washes and applications of gouache are distributed over this structure, particularly visible in the reds, blues, greens and yellows of the clothing.

The intense blue of the coat on the left contrasts with the earth tones of the central figures and the bright red of the woman’s dress.

The background, in soft orange and yellowish tones, avoids competing with the figures and focuses attention on their gestures and clothing. A small pencil drawing of a sun remains at the upper left.

The combination of line and colour gives the composition a distinct graphic character close to narrative and humorous illustration.
