A woman seen from behind, dressed in a long pleated skirt and a wide-brimmed hat, is the subject of this delicate sepia-toned watercolor. Her figure appears in a barely suggested architectural space, with her arms raised toward an element situated outside our view. The composition, constructed through transparent washes and an extraordinary economy of color, conveys an atmosphere of quietude and everyday intimacy.
The work is signed "R. Bosch" in the lower right corner and retains a handwritten inscription dated October 14, 1988, on the reverse. Its visual language relates to the tradition of 20th-century Mediterranean figurative and costumbrista watercolor.
The female figure in Mediterranean costumbrismo
The depiction of rural scenes, popular characters, and traditional attire constitutes one of the recurring themes of Spanish costumbrista painting, especially in Mediterranean regions.
In this composition, the protagonist wears a blouse with wide sleeves, a long skirt with numerous pleats, and a light-colored hat knotted under the crown. Her attire is reminiscent of traditional female dress in rural settings, although it does not allow for the certain identification of a specific locality.
The position of her arms suggests that the woman is performing some domestic or daily activity. However, the artist avoids expressly describing that action, focusing attention on the posture, the dress, and the lighting.
The anonymity of the figure, whose face remains hidden, reinforces the evocative character of the scene.
The treatment of light and transparencies
One of the most interesting aspects of this watercolor is its reduced color palette, dominated by ochres, earth tones, soft browns, and warm grays.
The figure is constructed through successive applications of diluted pigment, with special attention paid to the modeling of volumes.
The hat, barely tinted with color, stands out against the darker tones of the shoulders and back. The skirt acquires volume through vertical lines of varying intensity, which describe the folds of the fabric without resorting to rigid contours.
The shadow cast on the floor constitutes one of the most expressive compositional elements. Its irregular shape establishes the position of the figure within the space, while the walls and the architectural opening in the background remain merely sketched.
The white of the paper plays a fundamental role: it provides luminosity, defines the forms, and allows the scene to retain its characteristic delicacy.
R. Bosch and documentary references
The work features the signature "R. Bosch," whose full identity has not been established through documentation.
Among the historical references located is a watercolor titled Escena ibicenca (Ibizan Scene), cataloged under the same artistic name at an Ibiza auction house in 2018. A drawing of a female figure advertised as a work by "R. G. Bosch" is also known.
These references allow for the signature to be provisionally related to the market for Mediterranean figurative watercolor and drawing, although they do not constitute a definitive identification of the author.
On the other hand, an annotation appears on the reverse that could refer to "Cau d’Art," an exhibition space documented in Sabadell during the 1980s, accompanied by the date "14-10-88."
The inscription constitutes an interesting element of the piece's material history, although it has not been determined whether it corresponds to an acquisition, exhibition, framing, or personal note.

The Workshop Note
What distinguishes this watercolor is the ability to construct an intimate scene through a remarkable restraint of resources. The artist virtually renounces color to focus on variations of light, the transparency of the pigment, and the natural movement of the fabrics.
The skirt is one of the most accomplished details: its numerous pleats are described through lines of uneven intensity, while the cast shadow introduces a spatial dimension that contrasts with the lightness of the rest of the composition.
Also especially suggestive is the decision to depict the woman from behind. Her identity and activity remain open to interpretation, turning an everyday scene into an image of a silent and evocative character.
The signature and the dated annotation on the reverse add documentary interest to this watercolor, which is representative of a pictorial sensibility focused on the human figure and small episodes of daily life.
