Some landscapes need very little space to open up a world. In this small oil painting, attributed to Ramón Martí Alsina, the river, figures and light share a moment of stillness.

A pause beside the river

Two figures occupy the foreground by the water. One stands upright; the other sits close to the bank. We do not know who they are or what brought them there. Their quiet presence turns an otherwise empty landscape into an inhabited place.

The eye crosses the light bands of the river to reach the opposite bank, where ochre earth meets trees, vegetation and small buildings. A low line of mountains closes the horizon beneath a softly lit sky. The panoramic format gives a surprising sense of breadth to just 13 × 34 centimetres of canvas.

A landscape built with patches of colour

The sketch depends on an economy of means. Brief strokes define the figures; bands of light suggest reflections on the water; green patches give rhythm to the trees along the bank.
