Small-format oil painting signed by Renée, based on a composition by Nicolas Gosse depicting the meeting of Napoleon and Queen Louise of Prussia in Tilsit. The scene gathers a group of figures before a staircase against a backdrop of urban architecture.
The echo of Versailles in cabinet format During the 19th century, the art market highly valued the acquisition of faithful oil copies of the great paintings that triumphed at the Paris Salon. This work, signed by Renée, replicates with great technical precision the famous monumental canvas by the French painter Nicolas Louis François Gosse (1787-1878), a piece that is now part of the collections of the Palace of Versailles. The intimate format of this canvas (barely 18 x 14 cm) demands outstanding technical expertise to translate the grandiloquence of the original into cabinet dimensions.
The pulse of European geopolitics Iconographically, the painting is history framed. It immortalizes the tense encounter of July 6, 1807, the high point of the Treaty of Tilsit. In the scene, Queen Louise of Prussia appears before Napoleon Bonaparte to attempt to soften the very harsh peace conditions imposed on her country. The detail of the work allows for the unmistakable recognition of the figures who shaped the Europe of that time: Napoleon in the uniform of a Chasseur à Cheval of the Imperial Guard, Tsar Alexander I of Russia, King Frederick William III, and, observing strategically from the stairs behind, the minister Talleyrand.

Studio Note
The central group is organized around the gestures of the hands and the gazes that link the characters. The light-colored dress contrasts with the dark uniforms, crossed by sashes of color and golden details. On the left, the steps introduce depth and place other figures on a higher level. The facades and roofs close off the background, while the blue sky opens up the upper part of the composition.
