A small scene of everyday life turned into a period portrait. Under the awning of a street stall, a vendor attends to a child while conversations, waiting, and small gestures happen all around: other children observe the merchandise, a man remains seated and, in the background, several figures complete the neighborhood atmosphere.
Created in 1945, the work retains that immediate quality of a watercolor captured from life or constructed from sketches: the drawing remains visible beneath the color, more developed areas coexist with others that are merely suggested, and the focus is especially concentrated on the figures. The muted tones of the architecture and pavement allow greens, reds, blues, and ochres to define the characters and guide the eye throughout the composition.
More than a simple urban view, the scene functions as a small document of Spanish popular life in the mid-forties, with special interest in the clothing, street trade, and the presence of children around the stall.
The author
The work appears signed in the lower right corner “Rod” and dated 1945. The full identity of the artist has not been established with certainty, so the authorship is prudently maintained as it appears on the piece itself.
The level of execution, the breadth of the composition, and the mastery of the drawing indicate a trained hand, especially effective in the representation of human groups and genre scenes.
Technique and composition
Watercolor with pencil or graphite drawing on paper. The artist uses a highly visible drawing base, over which he applies transparent washes and some more concentrated accents of color. Notable is the contrast between the carefully worked faces and garments and the much freer and more schematic character of the architectural setting.
Condition
Condition consistent with a work on paper approximately eighty years old. Tonalities and oxidation stains can be seen, especially in the margins and lower area, as well as signs of aging also visible on the reverse. The image remains perfectly legible and retains the intensity of the main color areas well. The photographs are part of the condition description.
