The contemporary nude confronts raw material. A large-format work where the precision of anatomical drawing directly dialogues with the grain and history of the organic support.

History and Curatorial Analysis

The support as pictorial skin

Rubén Vidal (1970) makes a drastic structural decision: to forgo the neutrality of canvas in favor of solid wood. Far from concealing the support under thick layers of primer, the artist allows the natural grain to actively participate in the embodiment of the figure. This choice gives the model an earthy quality, integrating the natural imperfections and oxidation of the wood as part of the intimate atmosphere of the work. It is an exercise in double nudity: that of the figure and that of the material itself.

The rigor of the stroke and geometric contrast

Technically, the work is a display of structural mastery. Observing the anatomical detail of the hands and feet, we discover the assertiveness of graphite and charcoal, revealing the scaffolding of the drawing beneath the light glazes of color. Vidal does not seek the aseptic polish of academicism; he applies the non-finito technique (unfinished), leaving raw areas that document his creative process.

The definitive compositional success lies in the background. The artist isolates the organic figure by placing it against flat, geometric blocks of color (off-white in the upper half, terracotta in the lower). This contrast between the softness of the human curve and the rigidity of the space injects a striking modernity into a classic theme.

Why is this piece an opportunity for your collection?

  • Signature of International Projection: Trained in Spain, Italy, and Germany, Rubén Vidal has a proven institutional and commercial trajectory. Acquiring an original work by him documents quality contemporary Spanish figuration in the collection.

  • Architectural Presence: With its 120 x 78 cm and wooden support, this piece transcends the concept of a mere painting to become an object with visual weight and mass. Its monumental scale makes it ideal for structuring and leading the interior design of a spacious living room, a loft, or a professional studio.

  • Aesthetics of Living Matter: The patina of time, with its natural oxidations and marks, gives it the character of a "lived object." It is the perfect acquisition for the collector who values the truth of organic materials and shies away from standardized painting.

The Workshop's Note

What is striking about this piece when you stand before it is its scale and weight. It is enormous and structural. Vidal demonstrates here the quality of a superior draftsman: note the foot in the lower-left corner, rendered with a quick, nervous charcoal line that perfectly anchors the figure to the ground. We have decided not to restore or polish the wood because that is precisely where the strength of the work lies: in the contrast between the silent, delicate attitude of Lulú and the noisy rawness of the stained wood. A piece designed to dominate the space and provide a very high level of contemporary character.
