A work of strong visual impact and deep historical weight. This canvas by artist Rufino de Mingo combines neo-figuration with visceral surrealism, and possesses a provenance linked to one of the most important solidarity movements in contemporary Spanish art.

The composition plays dramatically with the dislocation of scale. Against a flat, vibrant blue background, the macroscopic structure of a gigantic green leaf stands out. Upon the vegetal surface, a series of small, human-like figures move, slide, or fall into the void. In the lower quadrant, two of these hominids confront each other in what appears to be a hand-to-hand fight.

Technically, Rufino de Mingo resolves the scene with a bold, impasto brushstroke with clear neo-expressionist roots. He strips the figures of precise anatomical details to focus on the volume of the flesh (constructed with pinkish, brownish, and gray tones) and on instinctive movement. The contrast between the passive monumentality of nature and the frantic agitation of the figures imbues the painting with a disturbing, dreamlike atmosphere.

The true added and documentary value of this piece is found on its reverse. The canvas features the official "Arte Axuda a Galicia - Marea Negra 2002" stamp.
