Rufino de Mingo | Organic Surrealism | "Marea Negra" 2002 | Oil on Canvas

A work of strong visual impact and profound historical significance. This canvas by artist Rufino de Mingo combines neo-figuration with visceral surrealism, and boasts a provenance linked to one of the most important solidarity movements in contemporary Spanish art.

History and Curatorial Analysis

The composition dramatically plays with the dislocation of scale. Against a flat and vibrant blue background, the macroscopic structure of a gigantic green leaf stands out. On the vegetal surface, a series of small human-like figures move, slip, or fall into the void. In the lower quadrant, two of these hominids confront each other in what appears to be hand-to-hand combat.

Technically, Rufino de Mingo resolves the scene with a forceful, impasto brushstroke with clear neo-expressionist roots. He strips the figures of precise anatomical details to focus on the volume of the flesh (built with pinkish, brownish, and grayish tones) and instinctive movement. The contrast between the passive monumentality of nature and the frantic agitation of the figures imbues the painting with a disturbing dreamlike atmosphere.

The true added and documentary value of this piece is found on its reverse. The canvas bears the official stamp "Arte Axuda a Galicia - Marea Negra 2002". This stamp certifies that the work was part of the historic charitable initiative in which the Spanish artistic community mobilized to raise funds after the tragic ecological disaster of the tanker Prestige.

Reasons for collection

  • Historical Provenance: The "Marea Negra 2002" initiative stamp anchors the work to a crucial moment in recent Spanish history, giving it undeniable archival value and interest for institutional or private collections with a documentary focus.

  • Plastic Force: It is an excellent example of Spanish expressionist neo-figuration. The vibrancy of color and the texture of the impastos have a magnetic presence at close range.

  • Consolidated Signature: Rufino de Mingo is a painter with an extensive exhibition history and a highly personal and recognizable aesthetic language.

The Studio's Note

There are pieces that stand out for their aesthetics and others for the history behind them; this canvas possesses both qualities. Visually, it is a bold painting that does not leave the viewer indifferent thanks to its peculiar play of scales and its fleshy figures with an ugly and brilliant aesthetic. Documentarily, holding a piece from the "Marea Negra" exhibition is owning a piece of the social and artistic history of this country. It is a resounding acquisition with a lot of character for any collection of contemporary Spanish art.
